While reviewing the traffic report for one of our sites I noticed that traffic was down significantly from the day before. I soon discovered that the change had occurred at Yahoo.

So I navigated to Yahoo, typed in the keyword, and gasped. The trusty Yahoo search ranking page we had come to know and love (because our site was ranked #1) was gone! It had been replaced by what appeared to be a normal, non-categorized search listing like you would find at most other search engines. And more importantly, our site was no longer on top of that list!

By now you probably know that Yahoo has changed the way that it delivers search results. The old way, of showing a page of categories (Business and Economy > Business to Business > Construction > Metals) in response to a search has been replaced. Visitors now see a few one-line category links followed by a list of sites that rank well against that search term.

Keys To Ranking High on the New Yahoo!:

It’s fairly clear that Yahoo will be utilizing several factors in their equation to determine what comes up first in their ranking. Keep these in mind as you register new sites:

1. Presence in their database. They won’t list you if you’re not there! So if you haven’t done it yet, get off your duff, dust off your credit card, and fork over the $299 to get your site listed. You can’t afford not to, period!

2.
4. Other factors. Every search engine applies certain weights to certain site criteria and change those weightings frequently. At the moment, Yahoo is doing that in several areas, which may change:

A. Giving more weight to hyphenated URL’s than non-hyphenated URL’s with the same keywords. Thus (everything else being equal) http://compost-makers.com would score better than http://compostmakers.com. This is especially true if the keyword is not the first element in the URL: http://best-compost-makers.com would score better than http://bestcompostmakers.com.

B. Penalizing sites that have numbers or early-in-the-alphabet letters before the keyword (probably in reaction to those who tried to beat their old alphanumeric ranking system): http://1compostmakers.com probably won’t even show up in the first several pages of their listing.

C. Not differentiating between .com’s, .net’s, .org’s, etc. This opens up opportunities to achieve top rankings through purchasing alternative domains to the .com standby.

How to move your website to a different Host!

To move away from your current host, or to be able to have your new website visible on the internet, you need to select a ( new ) hosting company, set up your account and upload your site to their server.

You also need to tell your domain registrar where the ( new ) domain is to be hosted, so that they can inform the Internet DNS system.

For the purposes of this tutorial we will assume that you have chosen us to be your new host.

Your first step is to order your 30 day FREE trial. Go to our hosting packages page, select the package which suits you then go thru the ordering process.

In our ordering process, you will be asked to supply basic name and address information. At the end of the process if you click on the link back to this site you will see our Get Started page, there you will be asked to supply us with the domain name you will be hosting with us.

As soon as we have all this information we will set up your account on our server and, once this is done you will be able to upload your site.

Your next step is to go to your domain registrars website and, using the password and username they gave you when comfirming your domain registration, log in to your domain management page.

Once on the management page you should look for a link to Change DNS or Host Server information or redelegation or something similar.

You need to change your host server address from whatever it may be now to the following:-
Primary = ns1.whms3.com

How to Upload ( FTP ) your Website to your Host Server!

Before you can upload your website there are two things you must do if you are hosting your website with us.

Order your package or free trial and have us set up an account for you on our server. If you are using a different hosting company ( why would you :-} ), you will need to contact them to ensure that your account is set up.

Go to your domain name registrar and change your host or dns server details

For instructions on how to perform the two actions above click here.

You will need to have ftp ( file transfer protocol ) software installed on your computer, if you don’t have any you can download free ftp software from here.

When you have installed your ftp software you will need to set it up to connect to the server, as follows:-

In the address field put your domain name, without the http://www.,
then, in the appropriate fields, put the username and password you were given by your webhost when they set up your account.

You should now be ready to click the connect button. Once the ftp software connects to our server you will be in the Root directory and a number of sub directories will be visible ( this may vary if you are not using our hosting service, contact your host for this info ).

Never delete any of these directories.

Open the www sub directory and upload your files to that folder.

You must have a file, usually your main page, called index.html or index.htm in your www directory in order for your site to become visible on the www.

Now that your site is ‘up’ on the www all you need is a few visitors.

If you want to get visitors from the ‘net you will have to promote your site. For tips and info about the best ways to do this, we recommend you start here.

Getting a lot of pages on your site now and hating to have to change every one individually every time you want to add a new link or some sitewide info? Well your troubles are over, welcome to the world of SSI ( Server Side Includes ).

Many people use Frames to get around this problem but, if you want to get listed in the Search Engines, I would recommend you stay away from Frames. Supposedly some of the SE spiders are able to find their way through framed sites these days, but I wouldn’t take the risk, as there is another option, which does the job you want to do just as well, namely SSI’s or Server Side Includes.

Take a look at this page, on it, the table on the right hand side, the table at the bottom of the page and the table at the top with the logo are all SSI files, which are included on just about every page on this site.

If I want to change or add a link or any information to the whole site, I simply add it to one of the SSI files, upload it to the server and all pages on the site are updated.

When the SE spiders call for a page to index the server includes the SSI files and with them all my ( text ) links to other pages on the site, which they can ( and do ) follow to access those pages.

I tend to set up my index and other doorway pages with layers as a .html file to maximise SE optimisation and so don’t bother with the .htaccess file which needs to be used if all your pages are .shtml.

I have some very highly ranked pages on Google and other SE’s using this system, so I can guarantee it works with the SE’s.

The one possible draw back that I have found, is that the process can slow down the page loading on the visitors browser, but frankly in my experience the difference is very minimal.

I do not intend to write a tutorial as this area is not my speciality and there is a perfectly good tutorial on SSI at http://www.bignosebird.com/ssi.shtml. In the into to this tutorial, the writer mentions checking with your hosting company to see if your server will handle SSI. WMS clients needn’t worry about, our servers do handle SSI.

If you want more info you can do a search SSI Tutorials on Google, there’s lots of em.
